The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Products Laboratory calls for a minimum retention of 0.6 pounds per cubic foot of Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) for structural members in contact with the ground. Morton Buildings specifies a retention of 0.8 pounds per cubic foot (33 percent greater than the USDA specification). Federal specification calls for preservative penetration of 85 percent of the sapwood. Unlike 6" x 6" solid posts used by many brand "X" builders, Morton Buildings' laminated columns boast preservative penetration of 100 percent of the sapwood (15 percent greater than the USDA specification). Further, improperly dried 6" x 6" posts and columns only have preservative penetration at the outer edges, leaving them prone to attack by insects and the elements. |

Morton Buildings' laminated column system assures customers of structural integrity and long lasting performance. Each column is anchored in concrete for structural support. Morton Buildings' footing construction consists of holes a minimum of 15" in diameter that are drilled at least 4' deep. The holes are cleaned of all loose dirt and 50 pounds of concrete mix is poured into the bottom of each hole. Steel rods, 0.5" x 9", are driven through predrilled holes located 3" from the base of the columns. The columns are lowered into the holes and additional concrete mix is poured around each column and then backfilled. The columns can also be anchored to monolithic slabs using Morton Buildings' specially designed anchor bolt system. |
